Retainers may be removable or fixed or combination(s) thereof. Once your active orthodontic treatment is completed, your braces are removed. The next step is called retention.

After removal of braces, retainers will be placed to “hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums, and muscles adapt to the new teeth positions”. Retainers help minimize the potential for tooth movement after braces are removed. You must wear your retainer as instructed, otherwise your teeth may move toward their original positions and the benefit of wearing your braces will be lost!

Dr. Patel will determine how long you need to wear your retainers. Time varies with each patient. Some people may need retainers for an extended period of time or to wear retainers indefinitely, in order to eliminate shifting of the teeth. In some cases, permanent retention may also be necessary.

The following photographs show several different types of retainers. Dr. Patel will choose the one for you that best helps to “retain” that great smile.
